My Project
My students live in a rural town, with many living below the poverty line. We are a Title I school with over 95% of our students being economically disadvantaged. Many of the students read below grade level, some significantly below grade level. The students do not perceive the value of education beyond the fact that not going becomes a truancy issue. Absenteeism is high and apathy is a factor that impacts student performance in classes and on standardized tests.
The students I work with every day do not experience enough exposure beyond their town (and often not even beyond their neighborhood).
They do not have enough role models and chances to step beyond their zip code to have a more connecting experience. The limited horizons they work with may be the culprit for much of their unenthusiastic approach to high school.
Upfront Magazine offers students opportunities to read about current events in a format that is appealing and accessible. It is a trusted source of information, and the magazine consistently provides content that encourages students to understand and explore the problems and conflicts of their world. Too often, they are unaware of what's happening and worse, rely on information that is questionable and sometimes very wrong.
One of my professional goals next year is to give students more chances to improve their reading and writing to reflect their critical thinking skills. I hope that the combination of our curriculum, use of Upfront's provocative stories, and intensive work on improving their reading and writing skills will better equip my students to compete on standardized tests and also prepare them to engage in oral and written discourse beyond the classroom.
