Bridging the Fractional Gap

My students need hands-on and visual fraction resources to accommodate the tactile and visual learning styles and to help develop and reinforce their conceptual understanding of fractions.

My Students

These highly energetic 5th graders are more visually inclined and learn math best when physical objects are accessible to help them make sense of problem-solving. I will surely share the resources across the grade-level so that 110+ 5th graders would have the opportunity to engage in such a powerful learning structure.

There may come a time when our students struggle with a certain activity, therefore we must find out to change the environment where they are equipped with the resources that match the real-world tasks at hand.

These students really enjoy highly engaging activities where they can utilize hands-on learning and accommodate their tactile learning strengths.

However, when we are engaged in solving real-world problems, we must be equipped with real world resources that we may be able to make relevant connections and improve retention of the concept.

My Project

As my students endeavor into more rigorous and higher order concepts of 5th grade fractions, I desire to provide them with hands-on resources that accommodates their tactile learning strengths. There is a great need for hands-on resources that will activate there prior knowledge of 4th grade fractional concepts and bridge them with the more rigorous and higher order 5th grade concepts.

The "Mastering Fractions Hands-on Kit" will keep them highly engaged in those key concepts, thus translating the extensive use of visual models into more abstract problem solving skills.

The "Solve, Flip and Check Fraction Cards" will be ideal for independent work and test prep, and the "Fraction & Decimals on a Number Line Activity Center" will be used to create a center where students will have the opportunity to engage in activities that demonstrates the relation between fractions and decimals through extensive practice.

These resources will be use to create activities that will help the students make connections and develop a conceptual understanding of their new found fractional concepts such as: adding and subtracting with unlike denominators, multiplying a fraction by a fraction, dividing fractions and

rounding decimals.
