Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing! We serve approximately 700 students in grades 6-8. Middle school is a time when students are figuring out their identities and how to interact with others in the world. Adding to these "normal" struggles, we are now living through unprecedented times.
Schools were not designed for distance learning and are not equipped to meet the moment; however, public schools and teachers are rising to the challenge.
We are adapting and figuring out the best way to support students navigate the world we are all in.
Our core goals as a school remain the same. We seek to create a space where students are proud of the many communities they belong to and have a sense of belonging. We want to help students understand their strengths and areas of growth while persisting through challenges. We want students to build and establish healthy relationships. Finally, we want our students to be effective communicators who know how to advocate for themselves.
My Project
Now more than ever, teachers need access to powerful tools to be able to reach students during distance learning. We don't know how long we will be in this situation. Teachers are resourceful and have risen to the challenge of creating the best education we can under impossible circumstances.
A high-speed computer will help me both manage a Zoom classroom with multiple tabs running as well as produce adequate asynchronous content for students.
While my school can provide access to tech for both teachers and students, what we can afford are Chromebooks. Chromebooks are great in many ways, but they are limited in what they can do. For example, I cannot download video-editing software onto a Chromebook. In our new world, effective instruction means producing high-quality videos that students can watch multiple times at their own pace asynchronously before they come to a zoom class. To maximize the time in a Zoom class, I need to be able to respond to data, utilize multiple breakout rooms to address the very different needs my students have. This is difficult to do on a Chromebook, which doesn't always have the capacity to run effective Zoom classrooms while screen-sharing and running multiple tabs. If this sounds complicated, it's because IT IS! Being limited by what a Chromebook can do is extremely frustrating.
By donating to my project, you will eliminate one of the many hurdles thrown at all teachers during these uncertain times.
