Bridging Music and Mathematics

My students need 25 Baroque Soprano Recorders with Books, 25 Desk Top Music Stands, one Deluxe Music Stand, a Theory and Harmony Wall Chart, and 25 "It's Recorder Time" Books.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Deacon's classroom raised $420

This project is fully funded

My talented high needs 6th grade students want to bridge MUSIC and MATH! They have very little music education background, but we have decided to incorporate learning how to read music and play the recorder into our classroom. Music is the only art form, where the form and the medium are the same. Mathematics is the only science where the methods and the subject are the same. Mathematics is the study of mathematics using mathematics. Music is only created and experienced as music. Thus, there is a natural connection between mathematics and music: Both are experienced as pure objects of the brain, and both have meaning outside of the brain only by artificial connections.

Our school only offers Music to students K-5, so my classroom of 6th graders is completely unable to receive a regular, structured music class. Most of the students have a high interest in music and would like to participate in music programs in high school - but without instruction or music equipment, they will have no opportunity to explore music and learn any theory or technique. I have much experience playing and teaching music privately, and would love to not only show students how to read and play music, but how music is directly related to mathematics. Unfortunately, my students do not have the means to purchase their own music equipment or books so we are looking for donations to make this project possible.

The supplies we are in order to incorporate music for the entire school year are relatively minimal: beginner recorders for the students to play and two theory books to play from. Our classroom also needs music stands and a music wall chart for reference. These items will benefit my students by giving them a beginner's understanding of how music is read, played, and created. Reading and playing music is a lifelong skill that otherwise would not be a part of these students' lives. They will also have the chance to study soundwaves and understand the mathematics behind scales/chords.

Your help will make it possible for students to experience and explore the power of music and music theory that they would normally not have any introduction to. Your help will also improve each student's opportunity for enrichment in community, after school, and high school music programs in the future.
