Bridging Math with Science : STEAMing about Bridges

My Students

I teach Gifted and Talented enrichment classes for four different schools, in the Grades Kindergarten through Fifth.

Some of my students are non-English speakers, but their love for learning is apparent.

My classes consist of diverse learners from various socioeconomic statuses. Most of my students are diverse learners who are very excited about their enrichment class, where we can do hands-on activities in addition to the monotone intervention and repetition that usually takes place. This is usually the only time where they are asked to be creative and develop their talents.

My students do not always come from homes where they are told that their futures are bright and they can become anything they choose. It is my mission to educate them about all the possibilities that await them and to nurture their talents.

My Project

My students will use the K'nex Bridge kits Bridges as an introduction to the history, function, structural design, geometry and strength of bridges while providing opportunities for them to acquire skills using a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to information and concepts. Furthermore, the kit will build my students' understanding of scientific, technical and design concepts and to channel their inquiries into active and meaningful learning experiences. My students will explore questions such as: Does the construction of a bridge determine its overall strength? How does geometry affect bridge design and function?What are some weaknesses and strengths of each of the 4 types of bridges?

My hope is to foster a love for STEM with lots of hands on and enriching activites as fostering a love of STEM will help students become adept at solving all kinds of problems and developing critical thinking skillsessons and when designed with various entry points and challenges, students from all backgrounds and abilities can become engaged.

The beauty of STEM is that there are often multiple solutions. Creating open-ended activities and accepting many pathways to solving problems speaks to this idea that we have diverse learners in our classrooms.
