Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are English Language Learners in a Spanish developmental bilingual program, which means that they are exposed to listening and speaking in English, but learn Spanish reading and writing first. These students transition into English reading and writing in second grade. My students attend one of the largest public elementary schools in Wisconsin, with nearly 800 students, 98% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunches. As the second and third grade English as a Second Language Teacher, I help to bridge Spanish and English Literacy.
If you were to enter my classroom, you would hear students speaking primarily in Spanish, but as I enter the room students begin to shift to English!
They are bridging two languages to become future leaders in an ever-changing world and I will do all that I can to support them.
My Project
My English Learners need to visually see Spanish and English vocabulary words, phrases, and sentences in order to make meaningful connections between both languages. All of my English Learners, especially those students with special needs, will benefit from using the Spanish-English Activity Pockets.
By applying their first language knowledge to English, my English Learners will make gains!
As they see how Spanish and English are similar and different, they gain valuable knowledge about both languages. As they are transitioning to English reading, my English Learners need practice with foundational reading skills. The Early Reading Quiz Cards will give them a fun and engaging way to reinforce phonic sounds in small group work and stations.
