FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. K.'s classroom raised $467
This project is fully funded
Our small K-12 school in Johnson Bayou on the coast line of Louisiana was destroyed by hurricane Rita. We are still not able to occupy our school building as repairs are being made and students attend class everyday in portable buildings. While our community is slowly being rebuilt, the students get to escape the harsh reality of their home life while at school.
In my high school math classes, I strive to make learning math fun and relate lessons to real life situations. Since all of our teaching resources were destroyed by the hurricane, we are making do with the bare essentials. In some classes we still do not have books. I would like to bring some excitement back into my Advanced Math class with a bridge building project. We have some very bright students who would love the challenge this project would create. The project would connect math, science, and technology to teach the Pythagorean Theorem, engineering, data analysis, design processes, and force. A balsa bridge kit is available through Pitsco as well as a lesson guide. The kit includes a Science Olympiad Structure Testing table, video, supplies, and books that can be used for many types of projects in the future.
I truely believe relating learning in the classroom to real life occupations will inspire our students to aim for higher standards in life.
