Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students and their parents are about to embark on a magical journey to fluent reading. My goal for all families this year is to embrace reading and learning to read. I have found a great way to ensure that students are reading at home is to send books home for them to share, for many students lack the necessary readng materials at home.
My hope this year is to send books home for students to read weekly that are slightly above their own level with the hope that they will get read to by a more capable reader. With the limited library books in the classroom, I am not yet able to begin this practice. Sadly, books sent home are in jeopardy of staying at home.
With multiple copies of the titles, like Guided Reading sets, I will fear this less. I will offer quality trade books that will also contain vital content, and the books will model the type of books the students should be reading. Hopefully, these model selections will empower families with appropriate book choices when they are borrowing or buying books.
Once I can start sending books home, I would like to begin inviting families in to school to talk about their reading. I would offer a meeting in the day and sponsor one at night. During those meetings, I would be able to pass on valuable strategies for reading with the children. The bridge from school to home will be established! Better reading abilities are sure to follow closely.
My hope in acquiring these books for students to take home would be to provide them with appropriate reading materials that will encourage sharing. In addition to sharing books at home, I would also love to see families in the classroom with students sharing their literacy experience. I propose to create a learning community that includes families. Perhaps once they start with this year, they will continue it throughout the years!
