This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are so funny! I'm always effected by their insights and confessions in their writing and speaking activities. For all the woe that teachers have around distracting technology in the classroom, I find that for every student who has check out into their phone, there's a pair or a trio somewhere else all laughing, all smiling, all looking at a screen- learning or experiencing something new together.
Very often, my students say something like "I don't wanna learn things I won't use in my real life" - to assuage this frustration in my students, I wrote a grant two years ago to purchase books for my classroom that reflect realities my students face.
This Afro-futurist reading program has been so successful I check out my own copies of the sequels to students who want to read more. That genuine interest in reading from my students has felt like a tremendous success!
My school site has multiple identities as the host of a special program for international students in addition to being in the urban sector of our city, with all the challenges those students face. This ironic diversity makes for a vibrant campus.
My Project
Because my school site has a large population of students who have come to our school district from out of the country, low reading levels are widespread at the school. High school book rooms are often under prepared to provide for students who are unable to engage with existing materials. Parable of the Sower is a text which is well received by students every year- its language is simple and approachable, its subject matter relevant to students the text has and will help a greater diversity of students succeed in English.
This book has been a huge success at the school already!
I'm applying for this donation to help resupply our collection of the books and make the text more widely available in class and around campus. Engendering students with a love of reading is possible and pairing it with rhetorical skills that will help them succeed is even better- effective classroom materials make both these things possible.
