This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am the reading intervention teacher and literacy coordinator at my school. As such, I work with students in grades TK-6 and their teachers to support struggling readers. Students come to my classroom to practice foundational reading skills at their level, and I also support teachers in the classroom with making their instruction more accessible to all students.
With thoughtful support, my students are capable of catching up to their peers in reading, but they lack access to books and activities that will expedite their learning.
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program will help with the structured activities they need. The decodable books that I am requesting will support younger students who are first learning to read to ensure that they do not develop gaps as they get older. It will also support older struggling readers by remediating any missing skills.
This program also comes with small group sets of decodable books that are designed to be of high interest to older students who are working on lower-level skills. Often times students who missed some basic reading skills are forced to practice with books meant for younger children and this can lead them to feel discouraged and bored. These books will make sure that students have books that are appropriate for their skill level and for their age.
