Brick Breaks: Engineering Calm, Creativity & Connection

Help me give my students LEGO building kits, offering them hands-on opportunities to explore engineering concepts, foster creativity, and engage in screen-free, collaborative learning activities.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My seventh-grade students are bright, curious, and full of potential—but many spend most of their free time on phones or Chromebooks because they don’t have access to hands-on materials like LEGO kits at home.

This project will provide a much-needed alternative: engaging LEGO engineering kits that allow them to build, create, and collaborate away from screens.

These kits will support their mental health by offering a calming, focused activity that reduces tech overload while encouraging problem-solving, creativity, and foundational engineering thinking—skills they don’t often get to develop in a traditional classroom setting.

Incorporating LEGO kits into our classroom will serve multiple purposes:

Indoor Recess: During rainy days or when outdoor play isn't feasible, students can engage in constructive play, promoting social interaction and teamwork.

Brain Breaks: Short, hands-on activities with LEGO bricks can help students recharge and refocus during long periods of academic work, enhancing attention and reducing stress.

Parents

Fast Finishers: Students who complete their work ahead of time can use LEGO kits to explore creative engineering challenges, keeping them engaged and learning.

Emotional Regulation: For students experiencing social or emotional struggles, building with LEGO bricks offers a therapeutic outlet to express themselves and develop coping strategies.

IU Indianapolis ScholarWorks

By supporting this project, you're providing my students with opportunities to develop critical STEM skills, enhance their mental well-being, and engage in meaningful, screen-free activities that foster creativity and collaboration.
