Breathe for Change - Social Emotional Learning in Kindergarten

I need funding for an intense, 200 hour yoga and wellness training that will expand my knowledge of self-care, social-emotional learning, and community-building strategies that positively impact our lives, classrooms and schools.

My Students

My students come to kindergarten with a variety of social and educational experiences, as well as varying socio-economic backgrounds. The past year has caused trauma to so many of our children, in multiple ways. No one was safe from the impact of the recent pandemic.

Studies show that yoga and mediation practice in schools has multiple benefits including reduced stress, increased emotional intelligence, decreased suspension rates, improved attendance, and enhanced academic performance.

In order to learn, children must first feel safe. There are significant associations between the social-emotional skills of a child and the likelihood of their long-term success as an adult.

My Project

I've been teaching for 14 years and have never seen a year quite like this. Students are struggling each day with staying positive and handle the stressors around them. Every day has brought us new challenges and changes. There is so much they cannot control in their world. Some withdraw, while others act out. It's very much like triage, giving children what they need most first. In our case, it's feeling safe and a sense of self. Yoga can help reduce the stress and fear in order for students to learn socially, as well as academically. I would like to learn from experts at Breathe for Change in order to serve my students more effectively.

Upon graduation, I will be certified to teach inclusive yoga classes to both adults and young people, and lead social-emotional learning and wellness experiences in my schools.

Breathe for Change, a community-focused, 6-week training specifically designed to support educators in transforming themselves, their relationships, and their communities. I will study powerful mind-body wellness practices like yoga, mindfulness, and breathwork, and learn strategies for self-care, social-emotional learning, and community building. These are the skills my students, families, and teachers need every day. Yoga and meditation is transforming my outlook and I want my students to feel the same.
