My Project
I have been teaching special education for 7 years and each year I learn more about the importance of social-emotional learning. This year I have 8 students across grades 2, 3, and 4. While they have diverse needs and backgrounds, the need to feel calm remains the same. Our kids are not ready to access learning material if they are not feeling safe, calm, or balanced. Special education environments often present unique challenges, and incorporating the Breathe for Change practices of yoga, mindfulness, and social-emotional learning into my teaching toolkit can have a transformative impact.
For my students, who may face various learning challenges, these practices offer a holistic approach to development.
The physical aspects of yoga enhance motor skills and promote physical well-being. Importantly, the mindfulness component equips students with self-regulation skills, aiding in emotional and behavioral management. For special education students, who often grapple with emotional regulation, these techniques become invaluable tools for navigating the complexities of their feelings.
Social-emotional learning principles embedded in the professional development program facilitate a positive classroom culture. This is particularly significant for students with diverse learning needs who may struggle with social interactions. SEL strategies empower students to build meaningful connections, foster empathy, and enhance overall social competence. As students feel emotionally secure, their engagement in the learning process improves, positively impacting academic outcomes.
