Help me give my students cleaner air to breathe and Green Space! We are on a mission to make our cafeteria greener. We just need the plants to fill our planters and grow a green wall.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Green Spaces are mostly absent in our school community. I love that my students have taken on the challenge of being Activists for Green Spaces in our School!
Our school is Title 1 and located in East Harlem, New York City.
My students are inspired by beauty and nature, but for the most part, they only see nature in the artworks we look at in the classroom. Rarely do they see inspirational green spaces in their school or community. With the exception of trips to Central Park or the Bronx Botanical Gardens, our students miss out on calming green gardens and fresh air.
We hope that this school year will be different because we have started a Green Team. In Green Team student learning is focused on Sustainability and Climate Change. Students have learned that NYC is a hot spot. Literally, a heat island. And, that their health and well being, as well as that of our planet, is sorely affected by the lack of green space in so many communities. My students want to make a difference. We are working hard to create an indoor green space in our cafeteria. We have painted our green wall, waterproofed, hung our planters, added drainage, but sadly we still need our air purifying plants.
We are asking for donors to help us pay for our starter plants. We would like the most air cleansing varieties for our cafeteria, pothos, snake and spider plants. We hope that our cafeteria will become a beautiful place to eat, breathe and relax. We also hope it will cool down in the warmer months because it is still not air conditioned.
We hope we will receive the funding we need to make our green space come alive.
