My Students
On the Big Island of Hawaii, I teach in a first grade general education classroom at an Elementary School. Our school is located on the east side of the island. Our school is a Title I school with a high population of low-income families. We service approximately 850 students.
My first grade students are cute, sweet, and definitely unique.
Each student is "one of a kind”. Every student has their own personality, interests, and life experiences.
As a teacher in a Title 1 school, I have to keep in mind that academics are not the only challenge for many of these students. Due to the high population of low income families, it’s common that families struggle to provide necessities and academic support at home. Although many of these students are faced with economic challenges, they are eager to learn and happy to be in school.
My Project
The first step to teaching is meeting the basic needs of each child. When hearing the phrase "basic needs" one might instantly think of food and water. In Hawaii, the most current threat is the Kilauea volcano. Yes, we are faced with the devastating reality that the lava will consume everything in its path. Although lava is a key indicator of danger, the silent danger is the sulfur dioxide emitted from the volcano.
The Kilauea volcano is beautiful yet deadly.
To be proactive, an air purifier will filter the vog(a form of air pollution) in the air. The children's masks will help students breath outdoors and indoors if the electricity is not working. The flashlights have a dual purpose, to bring light in a dark situation and to help us explore our science standards on light.
