This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Creating a calming corner in my classroom is an essential step in supporting the emotional well-being of all students, especially in today’s fast-paced and often overwhelming world. A calming corner gives children a safe, welcoming space to self-regulate, reflect on their feelings, and learn coping strategies. It helps students build emotional intelligence and resilience, skills that are just as important as academic learning. With tools like sensory items, reflection cards, and breathing guides, this space encourages students to take healthy breaks and return to learning focused and calm.
This calming corner also plays a powerful role in advancing racial justice in the classroom.
Many students of color come to school facing unique stressors related to racism, bias, and inequity, whether directly or indirectly. Providing a dedicated space that affirms their emotions and supports their mental health helps ensure every student feels valued, safe, and seen. It’s a concrete way to acknowledge and care for the whole child, especially those who may not always have access to emotional support systems outside of school.
By funding this calming corner with a rug, fidgets and dough, you are not just giving supplies; you are investing in equity and inclusion. You're helping create a classroom that recognizes the emotional needs of all students, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. This space sends a clear message: every child’s well-being matters and they deserve support, compassion, and dignity in their learning environment. Your contribution will help make that vision a reality every single day.
