Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are unique, loving, and intelligent, 3rd to 5th grade individuals from low-income communities within South Los Angeles. They bus in to school every morning ready to learn and work hard.
My students are students with Emotional Disturbances (ED).
They have experienced unimaginable challenges and continue to challenge themselves to overcome them. In our classroom, we continue to work on their behavior and social skills, so that they can be seen as the unique, loving, and intelligent individuals that they are.
My Project
In an Emotional Disturbance classroom, a Cool Down area has truly been the key to success. A couple of years ago, I was given a divider that has provided students with a quiet space that serves as an area of prevention and de-escalation. This area helps them escape from the classroom without needing to physically leave the classroom. My students can really use stress balls to help calm them, timers to keep track of their minutes within the Cool Down area, and a bean bag chair and rug to feel comfortable and welcomed. By also having a printer with ink, I can print out activities, "think sheets", motivational signs, and more for the area. In addition, the games would be used during their social skills breaks that I incorporate within instruction and as incentives.
My students are more engaged, less disruptive, and truly excited about learning when provided with social skills breaks and incentives.
My main priorities are to get them excited about learning and to help them regulate their emotions. I truly believe that these items will help facilitate this.
