Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn" is how I feel about teaching. I can teach and teach, but involving students in their learning is the key to making it stick and have meaning. Everyday I encourage participation and effort!
My students and my school are mostly second language learners.
Most come from low-income families and have many other obstacles to face besides learning 4th grade curriculum!
They are amazing, interesting, hard working kids who love to learn, but really thrive with the right resources. They need a variety of experiences and opportunities to learn language, as well as the necessary content.
My Project
A breakout box is a box or boxes locked with a group of different locks. The only way to open each lock is to solve a series of clues/puzzles/problems to get the codes. Once you gather all the codes, you can "break out" whatever might be inside. Breakout boxes can be reset and used for games throughout the year, covering whichever subject we need to reinforce at the time. All subjects can be applied to this project, as well as encouraging teamwork and collaboration. Students will learn how to problem solve, persevere, and work together.
Donations for this project will provide the opportunity for my students to really be involved in their learning.
This project requires that students apply what they have been learning in class. It will make learning more fun and engaging and hopefully make them look forward to reviewing and refreshing their past curriculum.
