This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a middle school remedial reading teacher, I am constantly searching for ways to spark my students' interest in reading. In the age of technology and instant gratification my job has become much more difficult than even a few years ago.

I teach in a rural middle school with a very diverse population.

We have a high level of English language learners and exceptional children. Keeping students focused, especially in reading, is a difficult task. Despite the many hurdles, we have dedicated teachers and staff who provide a quality education to our children.

My Project

I am requesting 2 Breakout boxes to be used in conjunction with our novel units. These boxes will provide team building and problem-solving which are often a struggle for my students. By tying this intense hands-on activities with our novel units, my students will combine their competitive nature with their comprehension of our reading selection. Because these boxes can be individually designed to meet our current needs, I will be able to continually revamp and change the puzzles with every novel and grade level. Students will use these Breakout boxes repeatedly with every novel we read every year. What an exciting way to test reading comprehension, especially since I'm allergic to worksheets!

The individualization and task-oriented problem-solving are the key elements to sparking my students' interest in the reading activities. Through the use of puzzles related to our novel, my students will begin seeing the "fun" in reading rather than it being "boring."
