My Students
Our students are ages 4-11, in grades Pre-K through 5th. We value education very highly here. The students in our school are thirsty for learning and come to our school from literally around the neighborhood and around the city, some from around the world. We have a highly diverse population, encompassing students whose families have immigrated from countries such as China, Pakistan, Israel, Russia, Haiti, and Trinidad, just to name a few. We also have students on all ability levels from gifted and talented to those with special learning needs, and everything in between.
As the school's Enrichment Specialist, it is my pleasure to teach every single student.
Ours is a school with extremely high standards that go beyond that of a typical city school. In order to keep our rigorous programs going, we do need certain supplies, equipment, and consumable items, and we are grateful to have DonorsChoose.org (and all the amazing donors) to help keep us moving at the level/pace that we do. As a non-Title I school, we miss out on certain funding opportunities that other neighboring schools receive. We have to find resourceful ways to make up for this gap.
My Project
On November 14, 2019 Jumpstart is having its annual Read for the Record event, and we want to be part of it! During this event, we will be joining more than one million readers around the country in reading the award-winning book Thank You, Omu! What better way to participate in a huge community event that promotes literacy than to read a book about community togetherness? All we need now is the 40 copies of Thank You, Omu!
Each classroom will receive their own copy of Thank You, Omu!
to read aloud on November 14th and help break a record. Students will fall in love with this book that teaches about community togetherness and sharing. They will want to take it home to read with family members. As this book will become part of the classroom library for virtually infinite use by students and teachers, students will have a chance to take this book home to involve parents and other family members in the comfort of their own living room or bedroom.
Being a part of this Jumpstart reading initiative gives my students a chance to be a part of something big. Read for the Record is an event that lends itself to lessons on breaking records, geography, community, and parent engagement. Thank You, Omu! is a great story that lends itself to so many wonderful lessons on community, sharing, book design, and so much more. This book will make a great addition to our classroom libraries, where it will continue to be read and appreciated by children and their families, for many years to come.
