Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Spanish and ESL in Idaho. This is a rural community, with a high immigrant population. The high school is a low-income school with a 55% free and reduced lunch rate. I teach a mixture of students from grades 9-12 with the majority being 9th and 10th graders.
There are limited classroom supplies for the teachers as this is a low-income, Title I, school district. My students do not have the resources or supplies that would enable them to expand their scope of learning another language through art projects and crafts. Most art-type supplies (such as glue, markers, and scissors) are purchased by teachers with their personal funds.
My students need more basic art-type supplies, like colored pencils, glue and markers, to help them learn Spanish through illustration and the creation of hands-on activities and art projects. Making an abstract subject, such as a language, more tactile and concrete will help students get a better grasp of learning new vocabulary, grammar and verb tenses. We also need some Spanish-English dictionaries to help the children learn new words.
Your donation will give students the tools and art supplies they need to grasp new language ideas and cross language barriers. Lets break down that language wall!
