I teach Spanish 2, 3, and 4 to 9th, 10th and 11th grade students who are passionate about learning Spanish and understand the benefits of learning a second language.
My students are a diverse group of learners in New York City who come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
I teach at a small school with limited resources. Classes are generally very large. This year, I have 30 students in my 9th grade Spanish 2 Class. Some of them have been studying Spanish for one year. Others have never formally studied Spanish, but speak Spanish at home. For this reason, the students have varying levels of proficiency and very different needs.
My Project
I want to build a library of books in Spanish that appeal to students at different levels. Having books available to the students and incorporating free, independent reading into the curriculum will reinforce many of the skills that students learn in Spanish Class and make learning another language fun and engaging for all students.
One of the most effective ways for students to learn more Spanish is to develop a passion for reading in Spanish.
This will only happen if I can provide them with a variety of high interest novels at a level that is appropriate for each student.
The students will have time in class to choose a book that interests them and read independently. Engagement is the difference between students memorizing information for a test and truly learning Spanish! I know my students will be very excited about these books and through reading, they will become more confident in their ability to understand and use Spanish.
