My Students

"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives", this quote exemplifies the character of Jackie Robinson and the example he provides for our students.

My students are diverse in many ways, ethnically I have students from 5 different continents who speak a variety of languages.

What I prefer to focus on is what they have in common. Many of my students live below the poverty line in the housing projects in a borough of New York City. Many of our students lack male role models in their lives and Jackie Robinson represents exactly that, hope for our students. Robinson's story inspired many of our students to write extremely personal reflections on barriers they have faced in their own lives. Students wrote about experiences like being a trans-gender teenager, immigration issues, hardships at home, and a variety of different developmental issues. The essays chosen for the contest are outstanding. Opportunities like this come few are far between for our students and I believe this trip would be very special to them on many levels.

My Project

This class trip to the feature film "42" will provide a very positive experience for our students. Our students will learn vivid details about Jackie Robinson's life experience. Seeing the many barriers and obstacles that Robinson overcame throughout the course of his life will provide students with hope for their own successes. Like Robinson, our students have many obstacles in their lives and providing them with a role model who achieved great success despite unfavorable odds will be a powerful message to say the least. Our students do not get opportunities like this often, aside from the fact that this film will be educationally rich, our students will also benefit from quality bonding time with their peers in a safe and fun environment. While on a greater scale this trip might seem small in stature, I can assure you to our students it means the world.

Students although young have a very clear perception of how teachers and administration feel about them.

This is an excellent opportunity to show our students that their lives and learning experience is important to us. We care about our students and we want to provide them the chance to enjoy the simple amenities in life that many of us take for granted while engaging in a learning experience that will help them overcome obstacles in their own lives. Please support our students future endeavors.
