My Students

I teach 6th grade classroom guidance as a daily elective at an Intermediate School. Our school is located in a very diverse area, and our population reflects this diversity. My students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. I serve all 6th grade students, and the academic levels range from gifted and talented students to special education students. As a “guidance” elective, I teach a variety of topics, such as soft skills, peer pressure, study skills, financial literacy, and career development. In my classroom, I provide opportunities for my students to learn in an informal setting. During my guidance instruction, my students love to collaborate, socialize, and play games!

This project will help our 6th graders to work together, promote the development of soft skills, and help them achieve a lifelong love of learning.

My goal is to reach all of my students and show them how fostering teamwork can lead to success.

My Project

I need supplies to make classroom Breakout Boxes (think educational "Escape Room") to be used by my 6th grade students throughout this school year – and for many years to come!

Breakout games are student centered, inquiry-based learning opportunities that require kids to use critical thinking skills; these games promote soft skills such as working under pressure, communicating effectively, and collaborating as a team.

The goal of the game is for the class to open a locked box that contains a class prize. Students will work in groups and receive clues by solving content related puzzles. Puzzles include tasks such as putting together puzzles pieces and then using ultraviolet flashlights to read the hidden clue, reading articles for answers, and decoding word puzzles. When the group solves the puzzle they receive a number (or letter). Once all of the groups have solved their puzzle and received a number, then as a class they combine the numbers to open a lock attached to a canvas bag, which holds the next set of puzzles. Each solved clue and opened bag takes them one step closer to unlocking the toolbox, which holds a prize for the class! If the class can open the box before the time runs out, everyone wins. These games will promote a great opportunity for students to learn to work with a team and have fun while mastering our classroom content.

I am requesting the supplies needed to make these breakout games. Supplies include a toolbox, several locks, blank puzzles, AAA batteries (for UV flashlights I’ve already purchased), canvas bags for locking a series of clues, bags to separate the clues per group, and magnets to attach to the final clue pieces so that they can be displayed on the whiteboard for the whole class to decode.
