Our school is in a relatively low socioeconomic rural area. Our town population is around 6,000, and we have several housing projects that serve our town whose children attend our school. Our poverty rate tends to run between 75-80%, and each of our teachers only gets $200 per year to spend on classroom supplies. My students love doing activities where they can get involved, but that is often really difficult to do with only $200, so I have to find a way to supplement my money and maximize the experiences I can offer my students!
Even though my project may only reach about 100 students this year, all materials are reusable, and I will be able to use them in subsequent years for future breakout boxes.
My Project
These are materials that can be used and reused to make breakout boxes for my science class.
Similar to the concept of a room escape, breakout boxes are designed for the students to be able to break an item out of a confined box.
The hasps and locks will provide me with enough materials to use with lockable boxes for 10 groups of students to be able to work on a breakout project.
All of the locks are programmable, which will allow me to create different scenarios where students will have to teamwork and problem solve to open the boxes and retrieve whatever is inside. The hasps allow for multiple locks to be used per box, so multiple puzzles and scenarios can be solved per activity.
