Brave the Page: A NaNoWriMo Book Club

My Students

My students attend an urban high school in Topeka, KS. The larger community often perceives our school as troubled and our students as disinterested in education. The truth is, these are teenagers just like any others, and they are hungry to learn and feel heard about the issues that matter to them.

I am working with high school writers who don't always remember that their voices matter.

My students are imaginative creators, every single one of them. Some of them don't always realize it. Sometimes they need a nudge. Sometimes, they need something unexpected to act as a springboard to greatness.

Many of my students come to school tired and hungry and worn out from the difficulties and pressures they face at home. There may not be time or space to play and indulge their creative sides. My library is a safe space to grow through creative exploration.

My Project

We have many aspiring writers who are keen to tell their stories. While we do offer a creative writing class, it doesn't always fit into their schedules. I'm planning an afterschool book club to read Brave the Page, which will help students prepare to write their stories during NaNoWriMo 2022.

Undertaking and completing such a huge project will provide my students with an unparalleled sense of accomplishment.

Being able to say "Yeah, I've written a book," will make it easier for them to tackle other difficult and daunting projects, both academic and otherwise.
