My Project

After reading Katherine Applegate's novel 'Home of the Brave,' my students will embark on a transformative journey of compassion. The novel, through its poignant narrative and relatable characters, sensitively explores themes of immigration, displacement, and the universal human experience of seeking belonging.

As my students navigate the emotional landscape of "Home of the Brave," they will emerge with hearts more open, minds more empathetic, and a greater commitment to embracing diversity and standing in solidarity with those in need.

This newfound compassion will not only enrich their understanding of the world but also inspire them to become agents of positive change in their communities.

After reading 'Home of the Brave,' my students can channel their empathy and understanding by organizing a donation drive for local refugee support organizations, volunteering at community centers assisting immigrants, or advocating for policies that promote compassion and inclusion for displaced individuals.

I will track my students' understanding of compassion after reading 'Home of the Brave' through reflective journal entries, group discussions exploring empathy in the characters, and analyzing their responses to real-world scenarios related to immigration and displacement.
