This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach in a 12:1:1 special education class in a tier 1 school in NYC. My kids are African-Americans and Latinx English language learners. What I love about my students is the effort they put into learning how to read. Earlier in the year, it was a struggle to get them interested in picking up and opening a book. But as we have progressed as a class, it has been exciting to see them get better at letter-sound correspondence and put in some real work. The problem is that my leveled books for early beginning readers are short in number from simply falling to pieces over the years due to wear-and-tear.
Having new books will keep them engaged and moving forward to the next level.
Creating some sense of novelty will keep reading fresh, exciting, and expansive for them, rather than being associated with some rote collection of the same stories and pictures over and over again. I like these readers for them because they are colorful and of a similar style with which I have had success in the past. These will be the books incorporated into their weekly library reading bags.
