This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my classroom come from differing backgrounds, but all of them bring a unique personality to our community of learners. My students come from low-income/high poverty homes, and with that comes different challenges. As their teacher, it is my duty to provide the safest and warmest environment for them to have their best opportunity for learning. My students need me to be more than just their teacher. Sometimes I'm a nurse, counselor, friend, mom, or superhero, and with that, I strive to help my students in any way possible.
My Project
All across the United States, literacy has become a struggle, but especially in schools with students coming from low-economic families. The families we serve at our school need to provide the basic needs for themselves so books aren't always a priority. Therefore, it has always been my priority as a teacher at my school to provide highly engaging books for my students in a take home library. Students take home 4 books in a bag and change them out weekly or bi-weekly if unfinished. I'm in my second year with the same group of students and I have noticed that this program does help improve their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
The books I have included in this project will be early chapter books.
I have a mixture of abilities in my classroom included learning disabilities, English as a second language, and students with autism and ADHD. Therefore I still have students reading levels below the optimal grade level. These students see their peers reading more challenging chapter books and will choose chapter books they are unable to read yet or ask when will I be able to read books like that. I wish to provide all my students with chapter books on their levels so they can feel equal with their peers. I have a few already from the Scholastic Branches and Acorn series line and they are wonderfully written and developed for younger readers. With your donations, these books would help develop the reading skills of my struggling readers and help them with their confidence.
