Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is made up of diligent, inspiring, and creative fourth graders with big hearts and analytical minds. They attend school every day with purpose and a desire to learn something new, to discuss what they think, and take pride in their efforts. My students learn in a bilingual community with a high level of family support. They attend our school with growing technology opportunities that enhance their approach, application, and articulation of their knowledge and their new learning. We balance this with creativity and physical opportunities with that support the development of persistence, teamwork, and determination.
My Project
My students need quality basketballs so they can stay active, develop sports skills, and strengthen their brains. We have equipment for recess time which usually includes one ball for up to 30 individuals. Many students spend this time waiting for a turn which means limited physical activity. During our Physical Education time, we want all students being active, and in turn, benefit from the exercise. We would love to have a set of 10 basketballs for our class to use outdoors so that our students can ALL participate simultaneously with partners or small pods of three or four. We will use the basketballs to develop skills of running, dribbling, jumping, passing and shooting. We will establish challenges, host 3on3 basketball games, and even develop simple team plays.
Playing basketball is a sport with great opportunities for Physical Exercise.
It involves swift movement and uses the entire body and muscles. Not only will playing basketball burn calories, but it will help build endurance, improve balance and coordination, develop concentration, and self-discipline. Playing basketball will contribute to developing a competitive spirit. In addition, dribbling and passing techniques and shooting tips make basketball a very strategic game to play. Furthermore, basketball can instil teamwork and confidence which will greatly improve as students gain control over the ball and the strategy of the game, We will be able to have small pods of 2-3 students work with each ball at once, which will keep them active and engaged.
“Children who are physically active have greater brain power” - Claudia Tanner
Please consider supporting the active learners in my classroom who joyfully participate in collaborative skill building. These basketballs will allow my fourth graders to have fun while staying active, developing sports skills, and strengthening their brains .
