Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a large, urban middle school with grades 5 through 8 where over 14 different languages are spoken! My school community is growing stronger, but we don't get much in the way of funding and our families struggle to make ends meet.
My students are hard workers who want to succeed, but over two thirds of them are English Language Learners and three fourths are at least one grade level behind.
They get very excited learning about music, history and current events, but our school is low on quality resources to engage them.
My Project
Brainpop covers all subject areas (math, science, reading, grammar, social studies, and writing). My students love watching Moby the robot and learning. Brainpop is great for introducing vocabulary and new subjects, but it's wonderful for review, too. My students love to compete against themselves to see how many answers they can get correct on the quizzes and games! Only a handful of videos are free and unfortunately, my school no longer has a subscription. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and I know they would benefit from Brainpop for group and independent practice because it's highly visual.
