Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Integrating technology into the curriculum is a priority -- if not a mandate -- in most schools today. Most educational technology experts agree, however, that technology should be integrated, not as a separate subject or as a once-in-a-while project, but as a tool to promote and extend student learning on a daily basis. The challenge, of course, is in finding ways to use technology -- and to help students use it -- that don’t take time away from core subjects." This is a quote from an Education World article written by Linda Starr. I have found the perfect use of technology in our classroom that integrates with all subject areas rather than take away from our curriculum and my students and I loved to use it on a daily basis. That use of technology is the website BrainPop. I teach over one hundred enthusiastic 6th-8th grade students in an inner-city bilingual school with a high percentage of poverty. Towards the end of last school year, my students and I came across the BrainPop website and signed up for a brief free trial version. We were blown away at how useful this sight is as a learning resource. I can not say enough great things about how BrainPop enhanced the learning process in our classroom. Here is the short list of the 10 best reasons why access to a one-year classroom subscription to BrainPop is a NO-BRAINER for helping to ensure my students receive the best learning experiences possible: 1. Bilingual education: Our school's philosophy includes the motto, "Being bilingual is our future" and BrainPop can be used in both English and Spanish by students. BrainPop helps my newcomer English language learners feel more inclusive by being able to explore the same topics as the rest of the class in Spanish. 2. Audiovisual: BrainPop includes hundreds of short content-rich video mini-lessons to reach audio and visual learners. 3. Interdisciplinary curriculum: BrainPop's topics cover all the subject areas (science, social studies, math, language arts, arts & music, health, and technology). 4. Whole class lessons: BrainPop can be viewed to either introduce or reinforce important concepts via the whole class using an LCD projector. 5. Learning center: Students often ask to use the computers after completing assignments, during their indoor recess time, as well as before school begins. 6. Technology: The world is becoming more high tech and BrainPop is the perfect way for students to use technology for the purpose of learning new things about the world. 7. It's animated: Kids love animation and BrainPop videos come with the characters TIM and the robot Moby, who present material in an easy to understand and humorous cartoon format. 8. Q & A: BrainPop enhances the classroom discourse by bringing up news ideas to question and explore. Students can explore such questions as, "How do X-rays, magnets, and radioactive tracing machines help doctors diagnose disease?" to "Where did all the money go during the Great Depression?" 9. Improving reading: BrainPop still requires students to explore deeper into concepts through online reading! 10. (last but not least) BrainPop is fun! See it for yourself and you'll agree! Our school has had to cut back on our technology budget recently and I would love to be able to afford to purchase BrainPop for our classroom, but I am in no position to do so at this time. Donorschoose.org has been a blessing for my students and I hope that your generosity can help ensure that my students will still continue to be provided with the BEST learning experiences possible. I thank you in advance for your support!
