Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves a beautifully diverse group of learners: they represent a variety of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, a significant population of students with special needs and multilingual learners, as well as myriad personalities, interests, and amazing qualities. They’re charming, thoughtful, tenacious, perseverant, kind, compassionate, and infinitely curious.

As a Title I middle school in Bushwick, Brooklyn, we serve students with high needs in an underserved community.

95% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch; 23% of our students have special needs or disabilities; nearly 20% of our students live in shelters or temporary housing; 16% of our students are learning English as a new language.

My Project

As educators, we set high expectations for our kids, but we also want to meet them at their levels. BrainPop and BrainPop Junior help students learn through videos, quizzes, and other activities, at a variety of levels.

With these tools, we can better teach students with different learning styles on all their different levels.

This is particularly helpful as we continue to practice social distancing, because students can utilize these resources on their own computers and at their own paces. The videos are particularly helpful for our more abstract topics, such as kinetic and potential energy. They can see concrete examples of what we're studying, which supplements the readings and investigations we conduct.
