This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are lovely kids who lack the advantages provided youngsters from middle-class and wealthy school districts. Many are English Language Learners, most come from high stress living situations. Many have parents who are ill, deceased, incarcerated, working several jobs or struggling to find work. A tragic number of them have lost loved ones to COVID-19 and have been struck by the virus themselves. Many have been exposed to sometimes extreme violence. Some of our students, though born here, come from families with undocumented adults and live with the fear of seeing their families split in two. But all of our kids hope to overcome the trauma of their lives to become successful in whatever way they define this and our teaching staff is here to support them.
My Project
My students are K-4 English Learners from highly stressed, vastly under-resourced environments and the pandemic hit them and their families hard. As difficult as it's been for kids, families and teachers to learn together remotely, it's exponentially more difficult for families where English is not spoken. Our parents have responded heroically to the challenge, but they still struggle immensely. One tool that helped them help their children more than any other was the trial subscription I obtained for BrainPop ELL, an online educational program that follows core standards of English Language Learning in all four domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing).
BrainPopELL will keep my K-4 students from falling behind and help them continue learning academic English through the pandemic.
This resource will continue to be of great use when we come back to school. Through adorable animations, children are able to learn to comprehend English, read it, record themselves speaking it and submit writing samples. As I review this work, I can tailor my instruction to each child's needs.
Although I was asked to pick a grade cluster, this program will help all of my students in K-4, plus some older children. Thank you so much for considering supporting them.
