Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

My Project
As a middle school educator with undiagnosed ADHD, I understand the effects of a dysregulated autonomic nervous system. I often found myself off task, which distracted those around me. While ADHD may not affect every student, all can benefit from strategies that promote nervous system regulation. A dysregulated nervous system can make students feel unsafe, hindering their ability to learn.
Identifying the root causes of students' learning challenges is essential for tailoring effective interventions that support their learning and emotional well-being.
In my classroom, students learn about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, understanding that safety is crucial for learning; Neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to adapt; and Zones of Regulation, which help them identify emotions and self-regulate for optimal learning.
To foster a conducive atmosphere, I implement regulation strategies such as breathwork and journaling. Breathwork helps students calm their nervous systems, while journaling provides a reflective outlet for their thoughts.
However, these strategies are sometimes insufficient. Many students in San Bernardino enter school with a dysregulated nervous system, requiring physical tools for calming. I have seen the benefits of shoulder weights, which ground students and activate the "rest" mode in their nervous systems, and fidget bands, which serve as constructive outlets for releasing excess energy.
Our objectives are to improve student concentration, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall engagement. By supporting this project, you will help us acquire essential tools that affirm our students' capabilities and potential.
