My Students
I teach 6th grade science at a large Illinois elementary school. My students are from low-income families and all are eligible for free lunch. As a teacher and lover of science, I want to instill my love for discovery and inquiry in my students.
Unfortunately, our science textbooks are outdated and not very motivating to my students.
In addition, because of drastic cuts in my school's budget, we are unable to purchase science resources. In addition to budget cuts, we were told by the school board to expect classes of 35 or more students, further cutting into our meager resources.
Most of my students do not have computers with Internet access at home, or parents to take them to the library. I would love to be able to have a learning aid that would allow me to teach my students about cutting-edge, current science discoveries and thought-provoking, age-appropriate news stories that are interactive.
My Project
A digital subscription to BrainPop will allow my students to use interactive software to explore topics in science. My students will be able to watch animated movies plus related interactive quizzes, learning games, activities, and read informational texts--aligned to the Common Core Standards for Illinois. I will be able to individualize lessons for each student so that I may strengthen their weaknesses and enhance their strengths. I will be able to bring thought-provoking, age-appropriate news stories into my daily lessons. In addition to teaching current events, I will be able to teach political cartoons, maps, graphs, vocabulary builders, debates, and ethics questions. With the use of BrainPop, I will be able to keep my students up-to-date on scientific facts since the world of science is always changing and evolving. My students are eager to learn interesting current event information and science facts that are geared toward middle school students.
This project is also important because minorities and women are under represented in the field of science.
By introducing my students to fascinating fields of science, their interest in science will grow and perhaps one day they will become scientists themselves. My students and I will be greatly appreciative if you are able to fund our project!
