This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching in a low-income inner city community for the past 15 years has been an amazing experience. My students are 3rd and 4th graders and have various degrees of special needs. They are sweet, eager to learn and have a great spirit that keeps me on my toes. Teaching a special education self-contained classroom is challenging and exciting at the same time.
Seeing the 'lightbulb' go off when it just clicks is extremely rewarding and they are so proud of themselves that they 'Go It!'.
Knowing they do not get a lot at home and are often responsible for helping with so many chores after school, makes me want to support them so much more at school. I want my students to know that it's ok to need help and to ask for it. That's how we can grow and learn so much more.
My Project
Students need to challenge their brains in many different ways, not just by reading, writing stories and completing math activites. Playing games is a way to do that. My students are not exposed to many games at home. Some have never played cards, memory or Go Fish.
Children love to play games and they don't even realize that they are learning and growing in so many ways!
Challenging their brain by playing games will help strenthen their academic skills, their social skills and their emotional skills. There is so much involved when playing a simple game with friends and classmates.
