My Students
My students have a different kind of brain. I teach 9 students with significant disabilities and/or autism. There are 6 boys including a set of twins and 3 girls which include a beauty pageant contestant. They are all anxious to get back to school after the Great Flood of 2016. I am looking forward to seeing them again on 9-12-16.
The twins try to fool me by swapping places, but I can tell who is who.
My students like puzzles, glitter wands, beauty contest crowns, superman glasses and race cars. They will be shocked when they see a classroom empty of all they have known. I have taught some of these students 3 years and others are into their 4th year with me. Several of them have lost their homes and vehicles as well. One of my student's father lost his motorcycle which calmed the student down as he donned a helmet and hopped on behind his dad. A basically empty classroom will be a shock to them.
This city, this school, this classroom is fighting to come back to life.
My Project
The Flood of 2016 has taken away every thing. My classroom is completely bare. These items will help us heal and get back some normalcy in our daily routine. Each student had special items which they are gaga over which help motivate them on slow days. Replacements have been ordered and well as basic supplies needed in a classroom. One of the Big Joe Roma Lounge Chairs will be used in the "Quiet Room", which students use when they request an extended break and the other will be used to create a reading corner in the classroom. The portable DVD players will be used in my behavior management plan for two students who like individual movie time as a reward. We are rebuilding our sensory integration program ,so the exercise balls and v-rocker will be a beginning to add some depth to that program which in the past has included a mini trampoline, a stationery bike, spinning toys and a therapy swing. Some students also sit on the exer- balls while doing some academic skills. It seems to help them focus. The ring toss and toss across games will help teach motor skills and social skills such as taking turns. It is hard to find a curriculum that works directly out of the box for my students, so the ink cartridges will be used to modify assignments and classwork. Staff will use the rolling adjustable stools to assist student's on their sitting level rather than bending or standing over a student. Credenza shell desks will be used to divide the room into designated teacher and student areas. We have no storage, so the desks will also serve to shield certain instruction items from student's view.
