"And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed!” This quote, by Dr. Seuss, is one that I teach to my 3rd grade students. My goal is for them all to be successful in school. I have taught a regular 3rd grade class, and next year I will be teaching the ESE (exceptional student education) inclusion class.

Teaching in a low-income school, the students bring in a lot of baggage. Sometimes the students are more concerned whether or not their parent will be coming home than remembering how to find the perimeter of a square. One concern our school had was if our students were getting fed. To reduce this fear, our school has a breakfast in the classroom program. Through this, each and every student is able to receive a free breakfast, every single day. I found out that for a number of my students, this was their first meal since lunch the previous day. Now here's the situation...first, I want you to try to think of a time you were so hungry your head hurt and your stomach was growling. Now try to imagine sitting in a lecture trying to concentrate on what was being taught to you. Pretty hard to get your hunger off your mind, huh? This is something my students have to face each and every day.

The breakfast program is absolutely wonderful. The breakfast is served to the students in our own classrooms, so the food is brought to our room every morning. But here's the catch...what isn't taken is unfortunately thrown away. Some of the items I am able to keep in my room and use for snacks later, or give to students who need some food at home. Some of the food, I am not able to keep because they will go bad if they sit out all day. If I had a refrigerator in my classroom, I could save the milk, juice, string cheese, and meat sandwiches. If I could save these items, my students would have healthier food available for them to have during snack, and take home at the end of the day.

You will make it possible for my students to be able to concentrate and learn more in school. They will be healthier and happier students, knowing they don't have to worry whether or not they will have food.
