My class of twenty-five students are extremely diverse. They speak seven languages besides English and come from anywhere from a low to high socio-economic status. Some students struggle to meet grade-level expectations without extensive supports, while others are gifted and need to be challenged in order to meet their full potential. All of my students are unique and learn in their own way. This wide range of needs can be a challenge, but is more than anything, an asset to the classroom culture.
My Project
Students need recess. In order to use our recess time to our fullest, my students need recess balls so they can enjoy playing soccer, basketball, four square, and wall ball. I'm requesting playground balls, sidewalk chalk, soccer and basketballs, and a pop up mesh hamper for storage.
Recess is more than just play, it it about developing social skills, feeding the brain, and increasing focus.
As electronics have taken over students' free time out of school , recess may be the only time during the day when children have an opportunity to experience socialization, real communication, and fitness. It has also been shown to increase focus. In one study, 60% of children worked more and fidgeted less on recess days. And brain research has shown that the brain is more activated during physical activity than while sedentary. Movement increases the body's ability to deliver oxygen, water, and glucose to the brain, which has been shown to improve academic performance.
