Brain Breaks and Real Recess!

My students need materials that will allow them to actually PLAY at recess. They need a recess pack, parachute and a speaker so they can be active and engaged for at least 60 minutes per day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, determined, and motivated, despite the challenges they may face at home and at school. Many of my students come from low-income, single-parent households, and many have experienced trauma that makes focusing on their schoolwork a difficult task. While some students have emotional disabilities, and others have social disabilities, all of my students are encouraged and supported in my classroom.

With such a wide range of ability levels, it is my job as their teacher to address all of their individual needs daily.

From the moment they set foot in my classroom, they become part of a community where they are motivated by myself and each other, praised, challenged, and loved. I hope to inspire my students to become lifelong learners, as I consider myself to be.

My Project

Recently, I received an educational grant through Fund for Teachers to visit and collaborate with teachers in Finland - one of the nations with the top performing education systems. These teachers and administrators emphasized the importance of active play among even the older children. I give my students at least 30 minutes of active play time inside or outside per day, in addition to 30 minutes of indoor "brain break" activity.

My kids inspired this project because we only have 2 footballs, 2 bases, and 1 jumprope for my class of 24; therefore recess is not always an active break for all.

Often times my students will use non-typical recess items (sheets, sticks, balloons) to simulate other sport games. When I asked my students what they wanted to help them stay active, they suggested we get real equipment!

The GRADE 5 RECESS PACK includes enough sporting equipment that my class of 24 will all be able to share at once. The PARACHUTE can be used by 22 students at a time too! This would take the place of the old sheet that was once used!

Another takeaway from my experience in Finland was the importance of brain breaks. Students need a chance to "recharge" their brains in between lessons. The equipment I have requested will be used during these mini-recesses throughout the day. These materials will allow students to complete various exercises within the classroom. Brain breaks, in addition to recess, will help my students get the necessary 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

The portable speaker will allow me to play music during the mini-breaks and full recesses inside and outside of the classroom. My musically-motivated students inspired me to request this item to enhance our activity time!
