My Project
My co-teacher and I are proud to teach twice-exceptional learners in the ICT classroom setting. Our students with IEPs take multiple AP courses, complete work-based learning, and engage in over 300 sports and clubs. Our job, as teachers tuned into the diverse needs of students with neurodivergence, is to provide academic spaces that allow them to thrive.
In such a rigorous environment, it's easy to feel overwhelmed throughout the day, which is why designated "brain break" spaces are so important.
We want to leverage the physical space we've been given to help all our students understand the importance of work-life balance. In the ICT classroom, we have a special eye on our students with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Emotional Disorders. These students benefit from having built-in spaces that focus on building social-emotional skills as well as self-regulation skills.
In order to create this space, we need more flexible seating options, sensory objects, and inviting, calming items to make the space welcoming and friendly. That's why we're requesting chairs and bouncy bands, sensory toys/activities (including stress relievers like putty, calming sticks, and engaging items like Legos), and some resources to help build mental health skills into adulthood (activity books). And of course, some snacks on hand if students are hungry. I'm most excited about the smart planter because I think it's a great way to make our space "greener" while showcasing an example of how technology can help with executive functioning.
We are super ready to expand this space and highlight the need for more mental-health mindfulness in high school classrooms!
