it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Why is it that, as teachers, we have difficulty getting our male students interested in reading books? They would rather get on the computer than pick up a book.
As a reading teacher, going on my 6th year of teaching 5th grade reading at a Title I school where 95% or more of the students receive free or reduced lunch, my biggest challenge has always been the boys.
How do I get my male students to love reading? My students are readers on a variety of levels from English Language Learners to readers struggling well below grade level. If only I could get them reading, it would greatly improve their comprehension.
My Project
The answer to getting the boys to read is obvious, most boys don't care about Prince Charming or happy endings, they want the blood and guts of it all. Books like Gary Paulsen's Hatchet, or Robert Comier's The Chocolate War are the ones that they want to bury their noses into. One look at my classroom library and I knew exactly what the problem was: my classroom library is full of books with happy endings. Where are the sports books, the shark books, the bug books, and the books on war and death? Our classroom library needs a makeover for the boys!
These new books will entice the boys to begin reading and hopefully help them to eventually develop a deep love for reading.
In turn, it will also greatly help them develop their reading skills and enhance their reading comprehension, enabling them to have academic success. I can't wait to see the boys with their books!
