My Students

Do you remember finding a book that was so much more interesting than those you'd been assigned? It's a wonderful moment when a compliant reader becomes an eager reader!

Our school prepares each student for college.

(Four out of five of our students will be the first in their families to attend college.) Some of our students arrive in the 5th grade reading at a 2nd grade level; others arrive as very talented readers. Part of preparing each student for college means that we don't devote all our efforts to remediating the skills of the struggling readers - we also want to make sure that proficient readers become excellent readers. We aim to push all of our students, whatever their levels, to achieve as much as they can.

My Project

These three books are popular titlesand deservedly so. "The Absolutely True Diary..." wittily and poignantly captures the travails of a young man straddling cultures, "Chasing Vermeer" offers a glimpse into the world of mystery and art, and "Chasing Lincoln's Killer" brings to life a harrowing period in American history.

All it takes is one book to illuminate that reading is to be savored, not endured.

Each of these books can put that transformative moment into our students' hands - literally. After reading these books, their hands won't be content to just receive books, they'll start reaching for them!
