Our boys need more books that will appeal to their interests and motivate them to read. In our 9th grade Humanities classroom, a class that combines English & Social studies, we are working on improving literacy and reading skills. Our school is a neighborhood school in New York in a high-need area.
The boys in our classroom just don't have enough books that appeal to them. We need more books that will help them learn to love reading and continue to develop reading skills. Our students don't have the money to buy books they like and our school has limited funds for supplies.
We need books that talk about sports, tell scary stories, share real-life fictional accounts, and in general, appeal to the 14 & 15-year-old boys in our classroom. Our students read independently three times a week so these books will be used on a regular basis, housed in our classroom library, available for our students to borrow and read.
Your help will ensure that our boys have something interesting and intriguing to read during independent reading. Boys often struggle even more than normal with becoming fluent readers. By providing these books, you will be helping our male students become better readers and improve their overall confidence as they succeed in reading.
