Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students learn life lessons through sports. We do activities that are outside of the sport to help relate lessons they learn on the court. For example, they are using journals to learn how to be better people off the court through lessons I teach them. Becoming better "people" helps them.
My students are grades 9-12 and most come from broken homes without Fathers.
I am working to build characteristics in them like integrity and character so they can become better "men" as they leave our school and my basketball program. Helping out with some of their materials like backpacks helps stay in my program and continue to learn life lessons.
My Project
Using the backpacks to transport their uniforms, and other materials helps the program out tremendously. Also, not worrying about funding some of the equipment helps them continue to be a part of my program. Many of them have already learned how to treat other people better by seeing others help them.
Being able to get things for them without putting more stress on the family means that I can also work with them all to teach them lessons about giving and being helpful to those in need.
It is a lesson that we are teaching daily. We call it being "Phenomenal". I have them do a phenomenal act weekly. through these, they learn how to be good to others on our campus. By the end of the year, I want them to be fully aware of being good to others and how that feels to them.
