My Students

With classrooms being driven by L.A. curriculum 4/5 of the day, brain research shows that girls have an innate advantage over boys. My goal is to provide opportunities for boys in my class to read about topics and genres of personal interest to motivate them as readers and create a boy friendly room

I have 30 4th grade students in a suburb of San Ramon, CA.

There are 16 males students and 14 female students. The majority, or 50%, of the students are Caucasian/White, 23% are Chinese, 13% are Hispanic or Latino, 10% are Asian Indian, and .03% is Vietnamese. Thus, it is a diverse classroom where the needs of the students vary drastically.

My Project

I have been doing research into the differences between boys and girls and notice that I don't have nearly enough "boy friendly" reading material in my classroom. Of course you’ll find a range of ability and attitudes in any group of students, but the boys continue to stand out with their do-we-really-have-to-do-this-attitude? They don't see themselves as readers, and I want to help them change their beliefs by giving them material that they are interested in. Research shows that boys read what they can relate to, so I would like to purchase a subscription of "Time for Kids" magazine for my students. I think this will promote reading of all kinds and hopefully will motivate students to see the joy of reading in their daily life!

Reading is a life skill that no citizen can do without.

I would like to promote the benefits of reading to my class and I think "Time For Kids" will engage them as readers! If students can find genres that they enjoy, like non-fiction, their reading skills will improve and they will grow as readers!
