My Students

Who says boys can't be bookworms? Sure, it can be difficult to find engaging books for adolescent males, but that doesn't mean they don't want to be bookworms just like their female classmates. They just need the right books to hold their attention and encourage reading for pleasure.

Almost 80% of my students receive a free or reduced price lunch, which means most of them come from low income families.

When parents are worried about money, putting food on the table, or being evicted, education sometimes takes a back seat. Because of this, it is very important that I encourage reading. Not only will students gain comprehension skills, but reading is also a great outlet to forget their worries and get lost in a story.

My Project

Recently, I've discovered that my male students love graphic novels. I brought in the five graphic novels I had, and their faces lit up. I had never seen boys so excited to read before. Unfortunately, five books are not enough for my 100 students. By getting new books, I can get students off the waiting list and get them reading. With more books available, their reading habits will change significantly. They want to read. They just need the books to do it.

When my male students read graphic novels, they are completely engaged.

Not only do they read and reread them, they try to write and draw their own. These types of books bring out a creative side of them I rarely see.
