My Students
Welcome to Zucker Lightning Exceptional Children! This class serves students with a variety of moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in the self contained setting. We focus on all core areas of academics within our classroom setting with an emphasis on functionality. Our students are full of energy and creativity.
As a teacher at a low income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges at home and at school.
Despite the many challenges my students face at home, they enjoy being at school in order to experience new things while learning.
My Project
The students in my special education class are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who have moderate and severe cognitive disabilities. Their disabilities impact their ability to read on grade level.
We need high interest, low level reading books that will motivate them to read.
We often sacrifice interest for reading levels. These books cover age-appropriate themes including animal science, citizenship, cause and effect, etc.
If my students have a variety of books to choose from, they will be inspired to read more often which will in turn improve their reading levels and ultimately make them better readers. These books will be used for language building and independent reading time.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
