My students need bouncy bands to allow them an opportunity to safely get their wiggles out while continuing to be engaged in their learning. Students can be active within the classroom at their tables!
I teach a group of bright, energetic, and eager young learners! My students attend a public Title I school in a rural area of Southeastern North Carolina. Our school serves over 500 students from preK-5. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and have many different needs.
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." - Ignacio Estrada.
My students are loving, passionate, helpful, and supportive. Not only do they motivate each other daily, but they continue to remind me why I do what I do! Despite the various challenges they face, they amaze me with their strength and determination to learn!
My Project
My goal is to increase physical activity and decrease behaviors! I have found the more students move and get their wiggles out, the less likely they act up and the better they can focus! I like to incorporate "brain breaks" into our daily schedule, but there is so much learning to do and so little time! My students decided to brainstorm ways they could get their wiggles out while learning was taking place and without distracting others around them.
At five and six years-old, my students are incredibly bright and creative.
They began thinking of ways they could "wiggle" at their seat while doing their work. Several students tried putting various objects underneath their seats to bounce their feet on. All on their own, they discovered the concept of bouncy bands before I knew they existed!
Kindergarten is the time in a child's education that sets the tone for the rest of their learning career. It is also a time when their bodies and minds are most active. The average five year-old has an attention span of 10-15 minutes. Typically students are learning on the carpet through whole group lessons or at their seats during small group or independent activities. Children this age need 60 minutes of daily activity to maintain healthy minds and bodies. I would love to be able to give my students more outlets in the classroom to be active in a safe and productive way.
Not every child does his or her best learning through sitting still in a chair. This opportunity for movement will help maximize my students' learning by helping to appeal to all of their needs. I am excited to see how having bouncy bands will positively impact the students I teach!
